TEC appointment welcomed
The University of Auckland has warmly welcomed the appointment of Professor Roy Sharp as the new Chief Executive of the
Tertiary Education Commission.
“This is excellent news for the universities and the wider tertiary sector,” the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stuart
McCutcheon, said today. “Roy Sharp has had top-level managerial experience at three universities: Canterbury where he is
currently Vice-Chancellor as well as at Auckland and Victoria.”
As head of the TEC, Professor Sharp would have some major issues to address, Professor McCutcheon said. “Governments
have consistently under-funded universities to the point where they are now $230 million per annum worse off in real
terms than 15 years ago.
“Roy Sharp understands the level of investment needed to harness our universities and the wider tertiary sector to make
their absolutely essential contribution to New Zealand’s economic and social development.”
