Universities Welcome TEC Appointment
The appointment of Canterbury University Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Sharp as the new Chief Executive of the Tertiary Education Commission has been welcomed by the representative body for New Zealand’s eight universities.
NZ Vice-Chancellors’ Committee chair Professor Roger Field says it is an extremely positive development to have someone at the TEC helm who understands universities’ vital contribution to economic and social development.
“The commission funds all public and some private tertiary education provision in this country and it is a fact that university funding has been progressively run down over a sustained period.
“My fellow Vice-Chancellors look forward to Professor Sharp making a difference when it comes to the appropriate recognition of universities’ role as the principal providers of research in this country and the educators of the professional workforce.”
Professor Sharp himself chaired the Vice-Chancellors’ Committee last year and in 2006 and is currently the deputy chair.
