Correspondence School teachers issue warning
The Correspondence School PPTA Branch is warning secondary teachers to think twice about applying for jobs at an institution that has had the heart ripped from it.
The school is facing its fourth restructure in 10 years, and this time all Heads of Department will be made redundant and replaced with new management positions.
The Correspondence School (TCS) PPTA branch chairperson Derek Bunting is warning teachers looking at applying for the new positions to “proceed with caution”.
The “continual restructuring” of the school could mean that even those jobs would not be secure and further restructuring was a realistic possibility over the next two to three years, he said.
Teachers who accepted a position at the bulk funded school faced the reality of a Ministerially appointed Board of Trustees (BOT) without parent, teacher or student members that sees continual restructuring as the way forward.
“From term two in 2008 the school no longer has secondary subject departments and no HODs. The BOT has ripped the heart from the secondary school”, Mr Bunting said.
The school felt the new structure for the organisation of teaching and learning had “serious educational defects” Mr Bunting said.
The school felt the BOT had devalued the work of teachers and said some of the new management positions did not have any teaching responsibilities at all.
“We ask teachers to consider seriously the likely consequences of taking a management position at TCS.”
