Sweet skills win scholarship
It’s no coincidence that national scholarship winner Alice Bretherton has a very sweet tooth. The UCOL Catering student
specialises in making pastries and desserts – and always samples her own creations.
“I love to cook and eat anything sweet”, she says, admitting she can get away with it without putting on weight.
Alice has just won a $2000 scholarship from Southern Hospitality Limited, one of only 25 students from throughout New
Zealand to win an award.
She will use her scholarship money for a second year of study at UCOL Palmerston North where she has already completed
Level 3 certificates in Baking and Pastry and in Professional Cookery. During 2008 she will complete the level 4
certificate in Professional Cookery.
She says her aim is to work in a top restaurant, as a pastry chef.
In the meantime she is working full-time in the busy Bakery at Pioneer New World supermarket, helping with the pastry
baking and customer service, and sampling new Christmas products.
Alice also practises her skills on her family who rarely go without dessert for dinner.
The Southern Hospitality scholarship is awarded to high achieving second year students training in any area of the
hospitality industry.
Julie Poole, head of UCOL’s School of Tourism, Hospitality and Catering, says the scholarships are awarded on the basis
of exceptional positive feedback from the training institute, covering such areas as aptitude, attitude, leadership,
reliability, cooperation, personal presentation and attendance.
She says Alice is a pleasure to teach and predicts she will have an excellent future in the industry.
