Open Polytechnic hosts PESA 2007 Conference
The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand will be hosting this year's Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia's
Conference. The theme of the conference, which will be held at Te Papa from the 6-9 December, is Creativity, Enterprise and Policy - New Directions in Education.
The conference will be officially opened by Hon Steve Maharey, Member of Parliament for Palmerston North and
Vice-Chancellor designate of Massey University.
It will feature speakers from 10 countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, China and Australia, as well as
academics from The Open Polytechnic and educational institutions around New Zealand.
Topics to be discussed include economic aspects of education, tertiary and higher education, social issues, creative
industries in education, and indigenous education.
Paul Smeyers, a Full Professor at the University of Ghent and part-time professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
in Belgium, will present a keynote speech on 'The entrepreneurial self and informal education: On government
intervention and the discourse of experts'
Robert Shaw, a senior lecturer in business analysis at The Open Polytechnic and one of the organisers of the conference,
says the range of topics being discussed will interest a wide variety of educational professionals. “The conference
brings together philosophers to address topics that are important in relation to New Zealand's national development, and
in particular the way that education could in the future contribute to our prosperity and wellbeing”.
Over 100 attendees are expected at the conference.
