Awards for UCOL’s best and brightest

Former New Zealand junior track cyclist Rosanne Chee is one of three students to be recognised as a UCOL High Achiever for 2007.

Rosanne, who is in the second year of study for a Bachelor of Human Performance degree, received a UCOL High Achievers Award at a ceremony in Palmerston North today (Friday).

She also received the Palmerston North City Council Jaycee Trust Scholarship.

Rosanne, who represented New Zealand at the Oceania and Junior World games in 2002, has taken up bodybuilding and put her cycling career on hold while she completes her degree.

Two other UCOL High Achiever Awards went to Shiree Craven, who is completing a Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging degree, and Kerry Coburn who is in the first year of study for a Bachelor of Nursing, at Gisborne.

The scholarships and awards for 2007 were presented by UCOL Deputy Chief Executive Academic Bonnie Dewart at a special ceremony held at UCOL’s Palmerston North campus today (Friday).

Ms Dewart says the High Achiever awards are a special way to acknowledge students who have shown excellence, passion and commitment to their study. “All of the awards and scholarships awarded today are intended to help our students to reach their goals and complete their studies successfully.”

In other presentations, the Andrew Cliff Award, for students who have supported others with their study, went to Graeme Campbell who is studying for a degree in Medical Imaging Technology, and Christine Finlay, Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging.

Two students, Margaret Mowat (Bachelor of Nursing) and Kirsty Callaghan (Bachelor of Applied Science) received awards from Graduate Women Manawatu.

The Palmerston North Soroptimist Scholarship went to Helena-Jane Pene who is studying for a Bachelor of Information Computer Technology.

Helena-Jane also won a Fenton Te Rauparaha (Ralph) Flavell Memorial Scholarship, along with Lynette Laing (Bachelor of Human Performance) and Debbie Hiriri (Bachelor of Nursing).

Lynette also won a Fletcher Challenge Trust Award, along with Sarah Manley who is studying for a Bachelor of Nursing degree.

UCOL Scholarships for Effort and Achievement were awarded to Raewyn Walker (Bachelor of Human Performance) and Sharon Andrews (Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging).
