Mr Pole is currently Deputy Chief Executive, Social Services Policy at the Ministry of Social Development where he has been since 2001.

He led the team at the centre of recent welfare reform in New Zealand including the introduction of Working for Families and the adoption of a new approach to supporting people with ill health and disabilities by Work and Income.
Mr Pole has also worked at the Ministry of Education as Senior Manager, Resourcing, a position he was appointed to after a number of years leading the Data Management and Analysis Division.
