Minimum wage increase good for students
Student Job Search (SJS) National Chairperson, Conor Roberts welcomed the increase in the minimum wage today noting it
will be, “good for students, their families and the community”.
“We are pleased that the Government has increased the minimum wage again this year, this will mean more money in the
pockets of students who will be working next year to cover some of the costs of their study.”
“With an incredibly strong economy and employment market, the increase in the minimum wage comes at an appropriate time
and is a great Christmas present for all those student workers who will be on $11.25 per hour when it comes in next
April.”
Student Job Search is the employment service for tertiary students and works to get great jobs for students while they
study. Summer is traditionally Student Job Search’s busiest time of the year.
“The signaled $1 increase in the minimum wage should push all wage rates up for students studying over summer,” said Mr
Roberts.
“Since 1 October we have placed students in a total of 11,316 jobs, which have earned them $31.5 million so far.”
“The average amount earned by students in jobs found through SJS was $12.90 per hour. We have been focusing on getting
higher value quality and course related work for students this year.”
