Increase in Medical Training Funds Good for NZ’s Health
The University of Auckland today welcomed the Government’s decision to increase its investment in medicine and dentistry
education from 2007, saying the extra funds will ensure it can continue to offer the best available training for
aspiring medical practitioners.
“New Zealand universities’ medical programmes are accredited to Australian standards and we’re pleased the government
has recognised the enhanced investment required to keep up with those standards,” says Vice Chancellor Professor Stuart
McCutcheon.
“Today’s announcement will help ensure New Zealanders have continued access to world class medical care.”
The Government is also seeking to provide more general practitioners in rural areas and the University will continue to
support this objective.
“This increased funding will allow us to develop medical programmes that meet New Zealand’s healthcare requirements,”
says Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Dean Professor Iain Martin. “In particular, it will enable us to increase
the amount of training delivered in rural and non-metropolitan environments.
“In anticipation of these developments, we have started discussing new opportunities in Northland, Bay of Plenty,
Waikato and Taranaki,” Professor Martin says.
