Future of architecture, design and landscape on show

A new generation of designers, architects and landscape architects are getting the chance this month to show the public
how they could change the face of their professions.
More than 230 graduating students from Unitec New Zealand’s architecture, design and landscape architecture programmes
are exhibiting the best of their student work at their graduate show – everything from innovative new products, stunning
contemporary jewellery, cutting-edge multi-media and radical interior and outdoor ideas, to the urban environment of the
future.
The Head of Unitec’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Tony van Raat, says that the show is an
opportunity for not only the public to see what the students have been working on, but to put Auckland’s urban
environment in the spotlight as well.
“We prepare our students to be excited by engaging with the challenges of the industry, but the student projects are
also an opportunity for them to go out on a limb and come up with ideas and concepts that challenge Auckland’s current
architecture and landscapes.
“Their work as professionals will have an impact on how this city develops architecturally, so we encourage robust
debate about what shape that urban environment should take.”
The graduate show is a collaboration between the architecture, design and landscape architecture programmes and takes up
dozens of galleries and exhibition spaces in Unitec’s historic Building 1.
Design students are displaying a diverse range of work and Unitec School of Design senior lecturer Roger Bateman says
that, with this year’s crop of graduating students including winners of the Best Design Awards , Metro/Canon Young
Photographer’s Award and a host of jewellery, photography and design prizes, the quality is both impressive and
delightful.
“Design-led industry is becoming an increasingly important part of our economy, and design is now in all aspects of our
public and private lives. These students are going to be at the forefront of this discipline and the graduate show is a
way for them to show the world what they are capable of, and for the public to see what the possibilities for design
are.”
