Success for Creative Writing Team
Three Bay of Plenty authors, who are also creative writing tutors at the Waiariki Institute of Technology, have more
‘notches’ in their writing belts.
Kingi McKinnon (late of Rotorua) has a collection of short stories, Tales from the Swamp due for release in November;
and his short story Maiki is included in the inaugural NZ Book Month short-story collection, The Six Pack, as ‘People’s
Choice’ winner. Book Month Director Phil Twyford said, “Kingi was an accomplished NZ writer and a wonderful man. NZ Book
Month is diminished by his absence, but we celebrate his talent with the publication of The Six Pack." Kingi’s recent
death was unexpected but his influence will always be felt in Waiariki’s creative writing programme.
Jenny Argante (Tauranga) has recently compiled and edited a book of children’s poetry titled Poetry Pudding, to be
published by Reed Publishing on Montana Poetry Day in 2007. Reed has expressed interest in her non-fiction book The
Crafty Entrepreneur. Argante has recently completed, on commission, a family biography of a well-known Dunedin and
Tauranga identity who will celebrate their 100th birthday in December. 'Fishy Tale' will be in a December issue of Pet
NZ.
Sue Emms (Whakamarama) was short-listed in the New Zealand Poetry Society’s international poetry competition, has a
story in Best New Zealand Fiction 3 Random House (Ed. Fiona Kidman), and a poem accepted for Poetry Pudding. Her third
novel, The Kindred Stone, has been accepted for publication by Hazard Press.
Programme leader Annabel Schuler says, “the Institute is delighted to note the successes of creative writing team, which
only confirms the quality of our creative writing programme.”
