Three Honorary Doctorates Awarded
China's chief scientist is one of three individuals receiving honorary degrees from The University of Auckland on 13
November (Maidment Theatre, 6pm).
Professor Yongxiang Lu, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is being awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering
degree.
The Governor-General of New Zealand, His Excellency the Honourable Anand Satyanand, and Paul Kelly, an American
investment banker and benefactor of the University's Business School, will each be bestowed with an honorary Doctor of
Laws degree.
President Lu heads his country's leading research and development centre in natural science, technological science and
high-tech innovation: literally the research engine of China. He is also a respected political figure in China.
He was previously President of Zhejiang University with which the University's School of Engineering has developed close
relations. President Lu has made significant contributions in the fields of electro-hydraulic systems and fluid power
technologies, and has received many overseas honours.
Earlier in the day he will give a public lecture and answer questions on the topic "Science is the key to China's
growth" (Maidment Theatre, 1pm).
Anand Satyanand, an Auckland law graduate, served with distinction as a lawyer, a District Court judge and Parliamentary
Ombudsman before his vice-regal appointment.
Paul Kelly, a member of the University of Pennsylvania's board of trustees, was an early donor to the University's
"Building a World Class Business School" campaign, gifting $3.5 million. This money funds Maori and general
scholarships, and the recruitment and retention of exceptional staff. Mr Kelly is committed to helping young Maori
develop academic and business capabilities.
