Language specialist appointed Assistant Vice-Chancellor
Victoria University has appointed language researcher, Associate Professor David Crabbe, as its new Assistant
Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
Associate Professor Crabbe is the Head of the School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies at Victoria and spent a year till mid-2006 as Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of
Humanities & Social Sciences.
In his new role, reporting to Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Mackay, David Crabbe will be responsible for
managing the University’s academic policy.
Professor Mackay, who is currently Acting Vice-Chancellor, welcomed Associate Professor Crabbe to his new role.
“David brings considerable academic and management experience to this role. A major focus will be the ongoing
implementation of the recommendations from the 2005 Academic Audit of Victoria by New Zealand Vice-Chancellors’
Committee’s Academic Audit Unit.”
Associate Professor Crabbe said he was looking forward to the challenges of the new position.
“Learning and teaching sit alongside research as the raison d’être of a university. I’m looking forward to working with
my colleagues at Victoria to ensure that we manage the learning and teaching part to the highest level.”
David Crabbe undertakes teaching and research in the field of language curriculum development, with a special interest
in learner autonomy. His most recent work has been in defining the quality of learning opportunities and how teachers
and learners might describe and manage these opportunities.
He holds an MA(Hons) from Victoria and Postgraduate Diploma in English as a Second Language from Leeds University and
replaces Jenny Harper, who has been appointed Director of the Christchurch Art Gallery.
