Student Leaders Encouraged to Raise the Game at the 2007 National Young Leaders’ Days
When it comes to reaching goals and achieving success it’s not about what you reach for - it’s about how you get there.
That’s the message for New Zealand’s future leaders who are being encouraged to ‘Raise the Game’ – a skill they will learn at next year’s National Young Leaders’ Days, taking place for Secondary School students in Auckland (March 15), Dunedin (March 19), Christchurch (March 20) and Wellington (March 26). Primary and intermediate events take place in Dunedin (April 30), Christchurch (May 1), Wellington (May 7), Auckland (May 17) and for the first time in Rotorua (May 11).
The 2007 National Young Leaders’ Days, run by the Halogen Foundation (formerly the Young Leaders Foundation), are designed to educate, motivate and inspire future leaders. There is a strong sense of the baton being passed as current New Zealand leaders impart their wisdom and knowledge to an emerging generation of future leaders.
In the six years they have been running the National Young Leaders’ Days have become one of the most significant student leadership events in New Zealand with more than 11,400 secondary school students and 20,500 primary and intermediate school students directly benefiting through attending one of the events.
Annette Fale, general manager of the Halogen Foundation, says this year’s theme ‘Raise the Game’ will encourage aspiring leaders to raise the bar and reach their goals by applying the knowledge gained at the events.
“It’s easy in life to go along with the norm but great leadership requires us to think about the journey ahead and how we go about this journey.
“The leadership days will encourage young people to think about the decisions they make now, the people they surround themselves with and the goals they set.”
With influential guest speakers like TV documentary maker Rob Harley, TV personality Jason Gunn and other high profile personalities representing business, sports, politics, community service, science, media and the arts offering information and advice, students will develop the skills they need for professional and private achievements.
Last year over 2,500 secondary school students and 7,000 primary and intermediate school students travelled from near and far to attend the events and listen to inspirational speakers such as Stephen Tindall - founder of the Warehouse and Tindall Foundation; Petra Bagust - media personality; Sarah Ulmer and Hamish Carter – sporting legends and Denise L’Estrange Corbet MNZM – Fashion Designer for World.
“Feedback from teachers and schools has indicated that giving participants the chance to draw on the experience and advice of high profile leaders inspires them to serve their fellow students, school or community,” said Annette Fale. “This causes a ‘ripple effect’ so that the knowledge gained by participants who attend the events benefits so many thousands more.”
Any student showing potential leadership skills within the school is invited to attend the event, and there is no limit to the number of students a school can send.
Tickets cost $42.00 per student (early bird rate of $39.00) and $15.00 for each staff member or parent. Schools can register online at www.halogenfoundation.org or by phoning Halogen Foundation on 09 636 1413 or 0800 624 641.
