International Students Treated Disgracefully
The New Zealand Government should be ashamed of itself.
If they knew of the situation where international students are being forced to ‘buy’ jobs, and have let it run on
regardless, they should be held accountable. If they claim not to have known that this situation has existed for some
time, they are guilty of willful blindness.
The situation of the employment agency charging students a fee of up to $17,500 is not new. International students,
applying for jobs in every field of graduate activity, are being charged up to $20,000 to receive a job offer. This
money is then paid to the employer as a deposit that the student will ‘train and remain with the company for a two year
contract’.
The deposit is usually equal to about six months salary, according to our sources.
This is disgusting treatment of young people, who have already paid exorbitant fees to receive a New Zealand Education.
Once qualified, they are further penalized by an inability to receive a good job offer, regardless of whether they may
be the best candidate. In order to finally receive a job offer, they resort to borrowing money from family or friends.
Is it any wonder if some of them turn to crime to finance their way into a job?
Those who work with international students put immense effort into helping students learn the kiwi way of life. Is this
the message we want them to take home? That in New Zealand, one has to buy a job? Will New Zealanders be the next on the
‘pay’ list?
