*2007 Teacher Fellowships Awards** Announced *
Research Science and Technology Minister Hon Steve Maharey will announce the 2007 Science Mathematics and Technology Teacher Fellowships on Wednesday evening. Many of the 54 Teacher Fellowship recipients have travelled from all over New Zealand to be at the parliamentary event.
Over the next year these teachers will take time off from the classroom to investigate topics ranging from modern cheese-making to search and rescue statistics; magma under New Zealand’s crust to sustainable building; and the biodiversity of 90 Mile Beach to the ancient Greek contribution to modern science.
Established in 1994 by the Government and administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand, The New Zealand Science Mathematics and Technology Teacher Fellowships offer primary and secondary teachers of the sciences, mathematics, social sciences and technology the opportunity to improve their teaching through experience in technological or scientific practice.
During their fellowship, teachers are able to fully immerse themselves in the discovery of knowledge or the transformation of it into useful products or systems and become more skilled in the communication of science and technology. Whatever they do, the evidence shows that the teachers return to the classroom and their students rejuvenated and inspired. They pass that inspiration and enthusiasm on to their students.
