New Zealand debaters knocked out at octofinals
The New Zealand Schools Debating Team have been knocked out of the World Schools Debating Championships in Cardiff, Wales at the octo-final level.
The team, consisting of Kathy Scott-Dowell (Samuel Marsden Collegiate School), Dan White (Rangitoto College), Craig Riddell (Wanganui Collegiate School) and Samuel Caldicott (Kristen College), had entered the octo-finals well placed on 7 wins from 8 debates.
They were unfortunately defeated by Canada in a 2-1 decision on the moot "That Governments should subsidise the arts of minority cultures."
Team coach Hamish Flanagan said the team were disappointed, as they had aimed to reach the quarterfinal stage, but were in good spirits.
