Unique Youth Event This Weekend
19th- 21st May 2006 6.30 Friday to 3pm Sunday, Victoria University Pipitea Campus
A volunteer team of Wellington young people have organised a unique conference this weekend with 150 youth delegates
attending from around Wellington – and not an adult in sight.
The On the Edge Youth Leadership Trust is a unique youth model – the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Their point of
difference is they are a completely youth initiated, youth driven and youth oriented organisation and develop programmes
and events to meet needs expressed by their peer network. Their main focus is sharing practical school leadership ideas,
skills and resources with other secondary school leaders from years 12 and 13, leading in college positions, arts,
sports or community programmes. The trust’s activities – and the conference – are set up and run by young leaders who
have a passion for the growth of NZ’s youth generation and who know the need for a strong support of, and network
between, secondary school student leaders. “We’re passionate about helping young people dream dreams and reach their
potential,” says Ben Irving, who first dreamed of and started The On The Edge Trust.
This annual Conference has been hugely successful over the past three years. It features a wide range of targeted
workshops, motivational speakers, a dinner at Parliament and the opportunity to share ideas and be inspired by other
active young leaders within the Community. Delegates from over 30 colleges in the Wellington region will be attending
and Mark Blumsky (M.P.) will be hosting the parliamentary dinner for the conference on Saturday evening.
Media are invited to drop into Victoria University’s Pipitea Campus over the weekend to see the incredible dynamic and
high standard of this event. This is an inspiring team of young people getting out and making a difference to their
schools and to their region.
It’s timing, at the end of YOUTH WEEK 2006, underscores the incredible contributions and positive impact kiwi youth
