Reporoa College launches new Wellness Centre
Students at Reporoa College have a new and improved one-stop-shop for health services.
The secondary school is officially opening its Wellness Centre this Friday 19th May, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11am.
“Students no longer have to wait outside the principal’s office to be seen by the nurse or doctor in a small sickbay,” says Reporoa College Principal Sue Winters. “The centre is much bigger and Health Reporoa nurses and doctors are there every week.”
The Rotorua Trust donated $100,000 towards the new building, which includes two multi-purpose consulting rooms, sickbay and nurses station.
“I’m absolutely thrilled for the students,” says Principal Winters. “The students really deserve to have this beautiful facility and we are all very grateful for the support from the Rotorua Trust – we could not have done it without them.”
The need for improved health services at the school came out of a survey in 2003, which highlighted a wellness centre and improved canteen facilities as two top health priorities. Toi Te Ora – Public Health undertook a survey earlier this month to generate ideas for the name of the wellness centre and the kinds of services they want to see at the centre.
“We are unveiling the name of the wellness centre at Friday’s launch,” says Sue Winters. “We have taken all the students suggestions and needs into account, in terms of services, resources and information.”
Rotorua Trust Education Committee chairperson Mrs Judy Keaney is officially opening the centre, joined by the entire school. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be followed by activities run by Toi Te Ora - Public Health, for Reporoa College students.
“The centre will hopefully contribute to the positive health and well being of students for many years to come,” says Toi Te Ora – Public Health health promoter Linda Johnston. “We are providing fun health-focused activities and fruit for a shared lunch for the whole school after the launch. It’s going to be a fun way to celebrate the new centre and encourage students to learn more about their health and wellbeing.”
Toi Te Ora – Public Health will continue to work with Reporoa College to encourage the school to take up the Health Promoting School way of working.
