Students head for Chemistry Olympiad
Four students, from Auckland and Wellington, will head for Korea in July for the 38th International Chemistry Olympiad.
They are Joshua Baker, from Newlands College, Wellington, Kuan-Lun Huang and James Park, from Auckland Grammar School, and Richard Stebbing, from Northcote College, Auckland.
The non-travelling reserve is Thomas Steinke, from Burnside High School, Christchurch.
They will be accompanied by Dr Jan Giffney, St Cuthbert's College, Auckland and Dr David Salter, University of Auckland.
They were selected after a training/selection camp held in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Auckland and St Cuthbert's College, Auckland 17-22 April.
25 students from Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Auckland competed for places in the team.
During the camp some of the students were able to share a meal with those competing for a place in the New Zealand Biology Olympiad team who will compete this year in Argentina. Before the camp the students undertook a preparatory training program of weekly reading assignments, fortnightly problem assignments, and two tests.
In Korea, they will face 2 exams - a practical and theoretical exam, each lasting about 5 hours.
As well they will have the opportunity to meet and get to know students from sixty seven other countries.
Last year, in Taipei, the New Zealand team won one bronze medal.
