The UniQ fairy visits the AIDS Foundation
UniQ Victoria, the support group for Victoria University’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) students, is proud to have made a donation to both the New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) and OutThere.
Paul Brown, UniQ President says “We’ve had an incredibly successful year and so it’s great that we can put something back into the community.”
UniQ Victoria had received invaluable support from the likes of Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association, NZ University Students’ Association, NZAF, GayNZ.com and UP magazine.
“After a string of incredibly successful events including the UniQ National Conference, and our GlamSlam pride week which featured the Ms Downunder pageant, Glammies community awards ceremony and two dance parties, combined with an excellent team management, we’re pleased to be in a position to make donations to two very worth community groups.
“The NZAF was our first choice as they’ve supported us immensely throughout the year and they provide excellent services and support to the GLBTI community, especially in a time of rising HIV levels,” says Paul.
“We were especially happy to donate to OutThere as through their SS4Q programme they’re providing excellent support to secondary school students. By educating and changing attitudes, they’re helping the community as a whole at grass-roots level.”
Following on from such a successful year, UniQ is now publishing a queer guide to Wellington due for release in February. The guide, featuring a message of support for UniQ from Mayor Kerry Prendergast, will detail what UniQ does as well as provide contacts for Wellington venues and support services.
“I think it’s just another small way we can help build better networks within the community,” says Paul.
“UniQ has achieved a lot over the past year and we couldn’t’ve done it without the immense support we’ve received, and so we want to keep building on that,” says Paul.
