Six new Enterprise Scholars get a chance to link with business
Six students from around New Zealand have been awarded Enterprise Scholarships by the Tertiary Education Commission.
Enterprise Scholarships encourage students to study and research in partnership with private companies or public
organisations, such as crown research institutes and city councils.
“The scholarships help build links between businesses and their local tertiary education institutions. This enhances
the ability of these companies to carry out the kind of research and development they need to stay ahead,” said Janice
Shiner, Tertiary Education Commission Chief Executive.
The scholarships give companies the opportunity to train potential future employees or up-skill current employees.
Scholars can study at PhD, Masters, Honours, post-graduate Diploma, post-fourth year under-graduate) levels. Their
study needs to include a minimum 20 percent research component.
The latest round of scholarships cover a range of subjects and industries, such as business, management, medical
biochemistry and clinical chemistry. A full list of recipients is listed below.
“The research projects are good examples of how everyone involved – students, universities and businesses – believes
they can benefit from putting good ideas into practice and working together collectively,” said Janice Shiner.
Administered by the TEC, the scholarships provide an annual stipend which is funded jointly by companies and the
government.
There are four rounds of funding a year and the final 2005 round closes on 30 November 2005.
“We encourage students, tertiary education institutions and businesses to consider this scholarship. It is a good way
to fund research that will build stronger links between businesses and tertiary institutions, and help develop the
knowledge economy we are all striving for,” said Janice Shiner.
