New professor in Management Communication
19 July 2005
Waikato Management School has a new professor.
She's Juliet Roper who is chair of the Department of Management Communication, the School's sustainability convener and
principal investigator on two high profile research projects.
Professor Roper gained national attention when she researched New Zealand election campaign communications and
proportional representation. She became recognised as Waikato Management School's 'worm expert' - the worm being the
measure for public support during televised election debates.
More recently sustainability has been the focus of her research. Commitment to sustainability by New Zealand
organisations and their support of New Zealand's ratification of the Kyoto Protocol is one of the major research
projects Professor Roper leads.
Her second major study is part of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology's Science Dialogue Project, which
focuses on ways to improve public engagement with issues of controversial science.
As sustainability convener Professor Roper represents Waikato Management School at EABIS, the European Academy for
Business in Society and as a direct result of that association has started APABIS - Asia Pacific Academy of Business in
Society. It's for postgraduate students and faculty studying aspects of business social responsibility and
sustainability, and will hold its inaugural meeting in October.
