MIT students design intranet for Edgewater College
Manukau Institute of Technology lecturer computer and information technology students have created an intranet for
Pakuranga’s Edgewater College.
The project has involved 26 MIT Bachelor of Information students working across three semesters and MIT lecturer John
Calder says it has been a valuable learning tool for MIT students.
“Edgewater College wanted a way to organise documents and make them accessible to staff and students using internet
technology. The staff had stored work on hard drives and they wanted more automation for organising that work and making
it easily accessible to different target audiences.
“The students met with Edgewater College staff to find out about the features required – just as they would in any
working environment. As some documents are for staff use only, our students worked to a real-life need for security
controls, followed by a large-scale test of those controls."
The website framework is now an ongoing open source project, worked on by MIT e-commerce and technical writing students.
“It is a great opportunity for students to put into practise the skills they have learned in class."
