Leading US Educationalist To Address Auckland Principals
Primary school principals in Auckland will next week have the opportunity to hear a presentation by an
internationally-respected American educationalist.
Arthur L Costa is a former Professor of Education at California State University in Sacramento and a much-acclaimed
speaker and writer on educational issues.
He will be addressing the second of this year’s inaugural series of “APPA/Multi Serve Breakfast Seminars”, organised by
the Auckland Primary Principals Association, with funding and support from Multi Serve Education Trust. The gathering
will take place at the Alexandra Park Raceway between 7.30 and 9.00 am on Wednesday 29th June
“Art Costa has done a great deal of thinking and writing about ‘school as home for the mind’. His compelling
presentations to groups of educators around the world have moved many to action in creating classrooms that are good
places to learn,” says the APPA’s President, Julien Le Sueur
“We are very fortunate to have Dr Costa as our speaker. He has visited New Zealand on several occasions but this may be
his last in a professional capacity. So our seminar will be an invaluable opportunity to benefit from his accumulated
wisdom. Dr Costa is the author of ‘The Enabling Behaviors’, ‘Teaching for Intelligent Behaviors’ and ‘Supervision for
Intelligent Teaching’” and edited the widely used text ‘Developing Minds: A Resource Book for Teaching Thinking’. He is
co-author of ‘Techniques for Teaching Thinking’, and co-author of ‘Cognitive Coaching: A Foundation for Renaissance
Schools’, as well as numerous other articles and publications on supervision, teaching strategies, and thinking skills.
Active in many professional organizations, Dr. Costa has served as President of the Association for Supervision and
Curriculum Development and as President of the California ASCD Art Costa has made presentations and conducted workshops
for educators throughout the United States and in Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the South Pacific.
During his current visit to New Zealand, he will be a Keynote Speaker at the West Auckland Education Centre’s ‘Powerful
Learning Conference’ as well as addressing the APPA/Multi Serve Breakfast Seminar. Julien Le Sueur explains that the
breakfast format has been chosen in the light of research commissioned by the APPA, concerning the professional
development needs of principals.
“Well-structured presentations by top-ranking educationalists at the start of the working day meet many of principals’
needs without biting too deeply into their time. The opportunity to network and share experience with colleagues over an
excellent breakfast is an important bonus for busy people. Multi Serve is performing an important role on behalf of the
education community in making this seminar series possible,” he adds.
