Can I Take Your Order, Please?
There are worldwide barista champions, people who are experts in designing menus for grand dinners and waiters around
the world who get tipped extremely well. They all had to start somewhere. Perhaps it was the café down the road.
Whether it's the barista champion you aspire to be, or it's running your own café that is the place to head to for
brunch or coffee, there is a new way to get the skills you need to achieve your goals. Following research, Waiariki
Institute of Technology has introduced a new way of training café operators, managers and workers through the
Certificate in Café Operations. This is in addition Waiariki's traditional, full-time hospitality courses.
Starting on July 25 at Waiariki four campuses in Rotorua, Taupo, Tokoroa and Whakatane, this 1 semester course includes
coffee and barista skills, food safety, service skills and how to create an exciting menu. Students can do the whole
course, or just select the modules they are interested in.
"We're really excited about our new course," says Janey Kyle, key tutor. "The flexibility for people who may already be
in the industry and wanting a refresher is great. And for those who are new to hospitality, the whole course gives a
great hands-on experience in all aspects of café operations."
