Back to School For Talented Engineering Student
Most students can’t wait to leave school and some only return for a reunion, but for Fergus Stanton, it was barely a year before he returned to Macleans College after finishing sixth form.
MIT computer engineering graduate Fergus Stanton is back working at his old school, Macleans College.
However, he didn’t return as a student, he returned as an employee.
Within months of starting his first job in 2003, the 19-year-old had been made network manager at the Bucklands Beach school. And when he started work he was still in the throes of completing a two-year Diploma in Computer Network Engineering at Manukau Institute of Technology.
The diploma that launched his career teaches network creation, building and maintenance.
At Macleans, Fergus maintains a network that facilitates more than 600 computers, used by staff and students. The job involves looking after servers, and upgrading and implementing new technology.
From a schoolboy who nurtured an interest in computers, building his own at home and studying electronics and computer science at Macleans, Fergus has certainly landed on his feet.
“I’m in a really good situation and I’m getting great experience here. There are great opportunities with all the different technology that the school gets into. We are looking at wireless but we haven’t implemented it yet,” he says.
“I want to keep increasing my skills and qualifications. Perhaps those qualifications will open new doors in the future but I’d like to stay here for a few years. I am very happy here,” he says.
Starting another paper next semester at MIT, the young achiever’s future looks bright.
