Learning through News
A new learning programme to help make current events come alive for primary and intermediate age kids has been launched in Auckland today
(May 3, 2005).
The New Zealand Herald’s NewsEd programme is part of the daily paper’s newspapers in education series.
The programme has been tailored by Ivan Behrnes, a specialist in newspapers in education and takes place throughout term two.
Mr Behrnes says NewsEd is a stimulating and interactive way to expand the minds of children.
“NewsEd involves kids with the news on a weekly basis while also complementing the national school curriculum to provide challenges at multiple levels. It also creates a valuable resource for teachers.”
The programme is designed to stimulate literacy as well as an appreciation of current events. It provides a weekly daily newspaper resource for teachers as well as a supporting website.
Every school participating in NewsEd gets 30 copies of the New Zealand Herald every Tuesday.
Each copy contains a full page NewsEd section with special elements such as a curriculum-aligned feature topic, a current events quiz, pictures and background information on newsmakers and the like.
“The website is a key element,” Mr Behrnes says, “enriching the NewsEd programme with curriculum links, background material, teaching suggestions and, most important, the answers.”
The programme operates in the North Island only and the NewsEd website can be viewed at www.nzherald.co.nz/newsed.
The NewsEd programme is sponsored by: Whitcoulls, 5+ A Day in partnership with Foodtown/Woolworths, Sky Tower, Purina Petcare, TV One/ZONE, New Zealand Soccer and the Small Whites programme, HP New Zealand, Wattie’s and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
