Students head for Chemistry Olympiad
Four students, from Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch will head for Taipei in July for the 37th International Chemistry Olympiad. They are Devarshi Bhattacharyya, from Auckland Grammar School, Daniel Chan, from Mt Roskill Grammar School, Wei Li Jiang, from Burnside High School, and Lewis Winn, from St Paul’s Collegiate, Hamilton. The non-travelling reserve is Acrane Li, from Westlake Boys’ High School. They will be accompanied by Dr Robert Maclagan, University of Canterbury and Dr John Robertson, Auckland University of Technology. They were selected after a training/selection camp held in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Auckland and St Cuthbert’s College, Auckland 18-23 April. In Taipei, they will face 2 exams - a practical and theoretical exam, each lasting about 5 hours. As well they will have the opportunity to meet and get to know students from fifty nine other countries. Last year, in Kiel, Germany, the New Zealand team won 3 bronze and one silver medal.
