Deep Lying Rights: A Constitutional Conversation Continues
The Hon Justice Michael Kirby of the High Court of Australia will deliver the annual Lord Cooke of Thorndon Lecture for 2004 at Victoria University of Wellington School of Law on tomorrow (November 25) at 5.30pm.
Media are invited to attend the lecture. An embargoed copy of the lecture will be issued tomorrow. Justice Kirby will answer questions after the lecture.
Justice Kirby was appointed to the Australian High Court in 1996, having previously been President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal for over 10 years. He is the youngest man to have been appointed to Federal judicial office in Australia and in 1997 Bulletin magazine included him amongst Australia's "ten most creative minds".
Lord Cooke of Thorndon, a Distinguished Fellow of the Victoria Law School and a former President of the New Zealand Court of Appeal who was elevated to the House of Lords in 1996, is regarded as New Zealand's most distinguished jurist. The Annual Lecture was established by Victoria University following his retirement from the House of Lords in 2001. The inaugural Lecture was delivered by the Rt Hon Lord Steyn, Lord of Appeal in Ordinary of the United Kingdom's House of Lords; followed by the New Zealand Chief Justice, Dame Sian Elias, in 2003.
