ARCHITECTUS TO DESIGN NEW SPORTS
COMPLEX FOR AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Auckland Grammar School continues its tradition of fostering sporting excellence with the appointment of leading architectural firm, Architectus to design a new sports complex adjacent to the School's main rugby field.
The 1,040 square metre complex will supplement the School's existing sports facilities which include three separate grassed playing fields, all weather surface tennis courts, cricket nets and a heated swimming pool.
The estimated NZ $6.2 million complex is currently in the preliminary planning stages with construction to begin next year. Proposed features of the complex include a large multi-purpose gym and associated changing and teaching spaces. It is envisaged that the project will also include the redevelopment of the existing cricket pavilion.
The sports complex is Architectus' third commission at the well known boys' school. Past projects include a three-level teaching block enclosing a new courtyard and an equally eye-catching and award winning technology and IT centre.
Architectus Director Malcolm Bowes said, "We are pleased to be able to continue our relationship with Auckland Grammar and be part of its future sporting success".
"Designing facilities for the school is a delightful challenge of balancing modern day educational requirements with aesthetics that complement the beauty of the campus' original building."
Founded in 1869, the 15.2 hectare campus of Auckland Grammar revolves around the original teaching facility, a magnificent Spanish Mission style building. Classified 'A' under the Historic Places the two storey building comprises an imposing hall, 23 classrooms, administration areas, staff common room, office and work rooms.
