Travel And Tourism School Announces Industry-Linked Scholarships
New Zealand's largest private training establishments for travel and tourism has further strengthened its industry links by with the announcement of a new scholarship programme.
Sir George Seymour National College of Tourism and Travel, which has five campuses throughout New Zealand, has just been awarded five scholarships from one of the world's largest tourism operators, YHA.
The scholarships - one of each of its campuses in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin - give recipients $1000 towards their course fees and ongoing work experience and involvement in the organisation. This will include going on familiarisations throughout New Zealand, work experience in YHA hostels and learn about various facets of the organisation such as marketing and finance. The recipient will also represent YHA while on campus.
Auckland campus manager for Sir George Seymour, Brett Keyworth, said the opportunity to have such close involvement with key industry players such as YHA is invaluable for the students, not only to increase their chances of employment but to get an insight into how the best tourism companies work.
“The YHA is a global success story and to get a feel for how they work and learn from their management will be extremely beneficial for our students,” he said.
Simon Duffy, business development manager for YHA NZ said it was important to invest in the future employees of the industry, and they were looking forward to providing a 'living platform' for students to achieve this.
“The YHA strongly encourages education through travel and so we will be looking for candidates who share this commitment,” he said.
“It is a great way for us to not only invest in the future of tourism but to give something back to the communities that support us.”
The YHA scholarships are just one of the many scholarship schemes that the college hopes to have in place, said Mr Keyworth.
“We are currently working with a wide range of travel and tourism companies with the intention of having a number of scholarships in a variety of areas within the industry,” he said.
