“Australia’s Enormity Seeks Contact with NZ Youth Groups”
From May 2nd to May 13th, members of a Tasmanian teenage committee “Enormity” will be touring the North Island with the intention of spreading the word about their public appeal for the donation of winter coats for the homeless and needy - “ National Coat Day”.
Enormity is a youth group based on the North-West coast of Tasmania, made up of 10 teenagers with the average age of 15. Enormity’s main aim is to create a positive attitude in their community. They run activities such as rock concerts, (where the headline acts have been Pacifier, Frenzal Rhomb and Jebediah), movie nights, an annual Charity Golf Day and events for younger age groups.
All members of Enormity find it very rewarding to be part of this group. Not only do they have a great time running events for their peers and creating strong friendships, it presents a lot of great opportunities and experiences. It also provides important links between the different age groups within the community.
Enormity’s main event is National Coat Day and this is what brings them to New Zealand.
Enormity became aware of a friend who was practically living on the street. They borrowed a coat from the back of Enormity’s founder’s car and gave it to the friend and from that simple gesture, a National Coat appeal eventuated to help other who may be in that position.
Since then over 36,500 winter coats have been collected from all over Australia and distributed to the homeless and needy. Two members met with John Howard last month, where they discussed National Coat Day. Australia’s Prime Minister Howard has donated a coat, as have many high profile citizens of Australia, including Elle McPherson and the rock band Killing Heidi.
Coat Day has a rising status in Australia and the four members will be travelling to New Zealand, looking for youth groups and schools and asking them to help out in making Coat Day an International event.
