Over $2million available for Charities and Schools
The Thomas George Macarthy Trust, a charitable trust administered by Public Trust, is seeking applications for its 2004 grants. Last year, over $2.2 million was distributed to more than 500 charitable and educational organisations.
Public Trust Chief Executive Pat Waite said, “I would encourage anyone responsible for fund-raising for a charity or education provider to check out their eligibility for funding from the TG Macarthy Trust. They should view the Trust’s website for details.”
Applications must be lodged by 30 June. The Trust’s purpose is to provide assistance to a wide variety of charities and education institutions in the greater Wellington region. The Trust region includes Wanganui, South of the National Park, Manawatu, Horowhenua and the Wairarapa.
Only charitable or educational organisations operating within the greater Wellington region are eligible under the terms of the Trust deed. Individuals, sports bodies and service clubs are excluded.
Established in 1912 following the death of Thomas George Macarthy, a wealthy Wellington brewer and benefactor, the Trust has been administered by Public Trust since its inception.
Recipients of last year’s grants include Barnardo’s New Zealand, Child Cancer Foundation, NZ Federation of Family Budgeting Services, Foundation of the Blind, Te Omanga Hospice, Wellington Free Ambulance Service, Life Education Trust, Life Flight Trust, Salvation Army and Women’s Refuge National Collective. All schools, kindergartens, plunkets, toy libraries and playcentres in the Trust region receive biennial grants and do not need to apply for funding.
The Board of Governors that makes all grant decisions comprises the Governor General, the Prime Minister, the Mayor of Wellington and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington.
Further information on the Trust and application guidelines are available on the TG Macarthy Trust website www.tgmacarthytrust.org.nz.
"Since 1912, the T G Macarthy Trust has distributed nearly $40 million within the Wellington region, with $22.5 million paid out over the last 10 years.
"The lives of many people throughout the greater Wellington region have been enriched through his philanthropy, and Public Trust looks forward to safeguarding and distributing the fruits of his labour to deserving organisations for many years to come,” Mr Waite said.
