Voting under way in nationwide trustee elections
Trustee election voting forms are being posted out to school communities this week – and election organisers are urging all eligible voters to make sure they don’t miss the opportunity to have their say.
The Trustee Elections are New Zealand’s biggest democratic event with 20,000 candidates sought to stand for 13,000 seats in 2,580 schools.
Elections Project Manager Janet Kelly says the nominations process has been very successful. The vast majority of schools have chosen to hold their elections on April 2.
For those working to the common date nominations closed last Friday and voting will take place over the next two weeks, closing at noon on April 2.
Janet Kelly says some schools have seen a huge expression of interest with Melville High School in Hamilton recording 17 nominations. Others have recorded between three to 13 nominations.
“The overwhelming majority of schools have been able to form a board – with just four out of 2,580 schools short of nominations.”
She says with so many people showing their commitment to trusteeship, school communities need to play their part in completing the democratic process.
“New Zealand gives parents and caregivers the opportunity to have a say in the way their schools are run. We are urging people to make the most of that opportunity and get their votes in.”
