Writing with the wekas
Wekas, wetas and kakas will serve as inspiration for budding and established writers at a creative writing day in the
Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, March 20th.
Event organiser John Curtis says the event – dubbed Tales from the Trails – is a unique opportunity to spark a passion
in people about New Zealand wildlife, particularly among children and young adults.
“It’s a chance for writers from various backgrounds to come to the Sanctuary and be inspired by the amazing wildlife,
and to write something – whether it be a poem, short story, or some creative non-fiction.”
The event includes guided tours through the Sanctuary, short writing workshops from writers and publishers, and readings
from some of Wellington’s authors and storytellers.
A panel of judges – made up of writers, journalists and readers – will select the top stories for publication, initially
in the Sanctuary newsletter and website and with a vision to one day publishing them as a book.
The project arose out of Mr Curtis’s involvement in a course run by Landmark Education in which participants each take
on a project that impacts a particular community.
“The Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is an incredible resource, and we’re blessed to have it right here on our doorstep. It’s
vital that young people grow up understanding how important and unique our natural heritage is. This event is a perfect
way to inspire people to become responsible stakeholders in the future of New Zealand conservation.”
