‘UCOL Students Celebrate Their Orientation Week’
The Association of Students at UCOL (AS@U) commenced by celebration of their 1st semester orientation yesterday,
starting with the annual free breakfast sponsored by ‘ZMFM’. “Student orientations have traditionally been for the young
ones, with late night events and early morning hangovers, but for the general population of UCOL students, we try and
provide something for everyone”, said AS@U President Damian Peeti, “in addition, the free breakfast has always been
popular with not just students, but the sponsors whom have sponsored the event in the past, for example, ‘The Evening
Standard’ and ‘Student Job Search’”. The breakfast food, included all the familiar ingredients such fruit, cereals,
toast served with hot spaghetti or baked beans and sausages.
AS@U ‘s main orientation event will be the annual ‘Market’ and ‘Clubs’ day, which will feature ‘ELEMENO P’ playing on
the Queen Street side of UCOL commencing at 12pm. “This is the first time we’ve ever hosted a big name band on campus
during the day, and it will be interesting to see how the day will be received by students and staff, however, I’m
confident that the day will be a success”, said Mr Peeti “ as long as the weather holds out”.
AS@U’s final orientation event will be its traditional pub-crawl, which will include 150 students wearing a
commemorative T-shirt. The troupe will travel to 5 local bars around central Palmerston North. This has always been a
great event to conclude a busy week of orientation, and it gives the students a chance to meet others, while
experiencing what’s on offer for a ‘student social life ‘ in Palmerston North.
As host responsible for the pub-crawl, AS@U have informed, the Police, Local Licensing Authority (LLA), City-Hosts and
PNCC, to ensure that we will do every thing in our power to up-hold the local alcohol by-law that has been enforced
within the CBD ring road.
“This has always been a concern and a high priority for AS@U, to ensure that we abide by the new rule.We have taken
extra precautions to safeguard the welfare of all involved including the welfare of the community”, said Mr Peeti, “ we
have the full support of all bars involved with the event, with the assurance that students will not be permitted to
have unconcealed bottles on them, when exiting establishments, which is a general rule for any licensed premises”. Mr
Peeti also said, “That AS@U have also instated ‘Marshals’ (volunteers) to also help with the moving of the group, from
establishment to establishment”.
