Unprecedented achievement for MITO
As at 31st December 2003, MITO (NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation Inc.) has achieved 33% growth in the total
number of people enrolled in MITO apprenticeships over the past two years. To date, of the 48 organisations that are

Apprenticeships. Of 34 industries, the automotive industry has the second highest number of students placed in the
nationwide Gateway programme to date.
Associate Education (Tertiary Education) Minister Steve Maharey congratulated MITO on their achievement. He says that
the government is targeting significant increases in industry training. "Strengthening learning in our workplaces is
vital if we are to boost our growth and productivity rates. MITO's success at boosting the number of trainees in the
motor industry is helping New Zealand to achieve the step up we need to build a more innovative and prosperous society."
MITO manages apprenticeships in New Zealand’s motor and industrial textile fabrication industries. MITO apprentices work
towards NZQA accredited qualifications. There were 3587 people enrolled in MITO apprenticeships nationwide at the end of
2003.
The Government established Modern Apprenticeships with the aim of encouraging young people into industry training.
Modern Apprenticeships are available for people aged between 16 and 21, and lead to National Certificates at levels 3
and 4 on the National Qualifications Framework.
“Modern Apprenticeships complement our standard apprenticeship programme, enabling us to provide these young people with
comprehensive services and support,” says Janet Lane, MITO’s Chief Executive.
