The Way Forward for Secondary Education

Programme Information
What is the purpose of secondary education? How should learning at secondary level be organised and delivered? What
knowledge and skills do secondary students of the future need? What do the experiences of students tell us for the
future? What should be the relationship between secondary schools and the wider community? What are the issues for
specific groups such as rural schools and Maori and Pasifika students?
These are some of the key questions that PPTA’s conference Charting the Future: The Way Forward for Secondary Education
will wrestle with next April.
A number of keynote speakers from Australia and New Zealand have been invited, and speakers confirmed so far include:

- Professor Alan Reid (University of South Australia)
- Dr Grady Venville (Curtin University of Technology, Perth)
- Professor Mason Durie (Massey University)
- Professor Dame Anne Salmond (Auckland University)
- Professor Ian Pool (Waikato University)
- Kay Hawk and Jan Hill (Massey University)
- Dr Jane Gilbert (NZCER)
- Dr Karen Vaughan (NZCER)
We hope to see large numbers of secondary teachers and principals at the conference, as well as students, parents,
researchers, academics, government officials and employer groups.
