City schools score scholarships

North Shore City secondary school students have scored well in national scholarship examinations.
Four national NZEST (New Zealand Education and Scholarship Trust) scholarships worth $1500 each of a total of 20
available, have come to North Shore City schools, with one of those four being a $2500 scholarship.
The latter was won by Takapuna Grammar student Tom Oh, who gained two 'firsts in subject' in accounting and economics,
worth $500 each, a credit certificate in maths with calculus, a distinction certificate for maths with statistics, and a
merit certificate in physics.
North Shore City Council last night (December 8) hosted a function where the successful students were presented with
their scholarship awards.
The NZEST was founded in 1991 as an independent examination board and has arranged these scholarships since then. This
is the last time they will be run by NZEST, as the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority
are reinstating the scholarships. Lion Nathan Education Partnership will continue as a sponsor.
Other top students in the NZEST awards, each winning $1500 scholarships, were Rhys Dowler, also of Takapuna Grammar,
Bowen Pan of Westlake Boys', and Robert Bowmaker of Rosmini College.
Other schools to have pupils do well in the awards were Rangitoto College, with 13 certificates; Glenfield College and
Birkenhead College with two each; Northcote College and Carmel Colleges with four each; Takapuna Grammar with one;
Westlake Boys with 13; Westlake Girls with four; and Rosmini College with six.
Scholarships worth $500 went to Rangitoto College (four); Takapuna Grammar (one); Westlake Boys (one); Westlake Girls
(one); and Rosmini College (one). These students have ranked in the top 70 over five subjects.
Prizes for high achievement worth $150 went to students at Long Bay College, (one); Rangitoto College (four); Northcote
and Carmel Colleges and Takapuna Grammar (one each); Westlake Boys (three); Westlake Girls (two); and Rosmini College,
(one).

BACKGROUND TO THE SCHOLARSHIPS
The mayor will speak briefly following the presentation of certificates for credits and merit awards and prior to the
presentation of subject prizes for high achievement and scholarship awards.

Good evening to you all, and congratulations to all the award winners on behalf of North Shore City.
It is a great pleasure for me to be here tonight to present the awards - it is wonderful to see so many local students
doing so well in these scholarships and awards. It brings great credit to you, to your families, your schools and your
community. We are all very proud of you.
In this year's NZEST scholarship round, a total of 168 North Shore secondary school students have won awards or
certificates, and three of the students are in the top 14 nationally. They're invited to Wellington, and will be flown
to the National ceremony at Parliament Buildings on December 15, hosted by Trevor Mallard.
This is the 12th and final year that the NZEST is involved with the scholarships, as they will in future be run by the
Education Department and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. We are indebted to the NZEST and to the sponsor, Lion
Nathan, for the huge support they have given to these scholarships over the years.
We are lucky in North Shore City to have a number of great schools - producing great students. Our universities too are
first rate, and these institutions make a major contribution to our community and our city.
I really enjoy being involved in this annual ceremony for the NZEST awards, as it's just great to see your hard work
recognised and rewarded.
And having achieved these goals, I am sure you will be quite happy to go on and face new challenges and take on new
interests as your career opportunities unfold ahead of you.
You have demonstrated to yourselves that you set yourselves a task, you can work toward it and achieve it - and believe
me, that work ethic will pay dividends many times over as you establish your interests, and your vocation.
And most of all, by keeping your work and your recreation in balance, you will find rewards and satisfaction in the
challenges ahead.
And I trust you will allow yourselves a little rest and recreation as the holiday season approaches - I wish you all the
best for the season - and a prosperous New Year.
