WelTec students win national business award
Three Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) business management students have won the 2003 New Zealand Institute of Management Applied Management Award.
This national award is given annually in a competition for graduates of the New Zealand Diploma in Business 236 Applied Management paper. Approximately 30 projects were submitted to the industry judging panel this year. The finalists were required to give an oral presentation and to answer questions before the national judging panel in Rotorua.
WelTec students Stephen Marks, Katrina Thomas, and Connie Nicholson presented their succession and marketing plan for the new owner who was purchasing an established fire and general insurance brokerage.
“Their work was of a very high quality and a lot of the predictions they made about the industry in general have happened in the twelve months since the project was completed,” says WelTec business management tutor, Robert Nelson. “Not only that, but many of their specific recommendations have been implemented into the business. This applied management paper is one that emphasises work-ready skills across a wide range of essential management disciplines and we’re delighted that their work continues to produce such positive results for their client one year on.”
All of the WelTec student team work full-time in industry and are studying part-time for the NZ Diploma in Business.
The team won a cash prize of $1000, one year’s membership of NZIM, and a framed certificate for each member of the team. They were presented with the award at the Millennium Hotel in Rotorua on September 29.
