Visit to India Opens Doors to Opportunities
High demand in India for tertiary education could have positive spin-offs for Waiariki Institute of Technology in the
future.
Waiariki’s International Manager, Roger Gordon recently joined 20 other New Zealand Institutes of Technology and
Universities on an educational promotion in India. This included a series of education fairs in Mumbai, Bangalore,
Chennai and New Delhi.
"Although many are looking for post graduate and MBA programmes, there is an increasing number wanting complementary New
Zealand qualifications," said Gordon.
"It is certainly going to be a very large market in the future as India struggles to keep abreast of the demand for
tertiary education."
After New Delhi, Gordon left the roadshow to extend his stay with an organised seminar programme with an educational
agent from Chandigargh in the Punjab, a northern state of India. Gordon hosted a press conference which resulted in
Waiariki gaining presence on two television programmes and in one newspaper.
Based in Chandigarh, he also visited the cities of Jalandah, Ludiana and Solan. According to Gordon, there was a good
response from prospective students although the acceptance requirement is a little more rigidly enforced for the Punjab.
"The city of Solan was very interesting, a hill mountain about 5000 ft above sea level. All of the houses are perched on
the hillsides and the cities roads weave up and down, round and round. I also visited one of the major Indian Forestry
Universities in Solan with whom I hope we can forge a closer relationship, particularly with the forthcoming development
of the RADI Centre,” observed Gordon.
Gordon says India is a land of contrasts with incredible potential and will develop a strategy to help realise that
potential for Waiariki.
