Northland Principal Honoured
Maungatoroto principal, Tony Hamilton, has today been honoured for his contribution to education.
He was made an Associate of the country’s largest education union, NZEI Te Riu Roa at awards ceremony in Wellington.
NZEI Te Riu Roa has 42,000 members and represents teachers and principals in primary schools, teachers in early
childhood education centres, support staff in primary and secondary schools, special education staff in primary and
secondary schools and advisers in the tertiary sector.
The awards were presented by Bruce Adin, NZEI Te Riu Roa National President, at the opening of the union’s 120th Annual
Meeting in Wellington. They are given in recognition of the members contribution to education and the union.
“This award acknowledges a commitment to excellence in education,” says Bruce Adin.
“It is given in recognition for the hard work the member done to support their colleagues and to help the students they
work with.”
Tony Hamilton is principal of Maungaturoto Primary School. His teaching career began in 1981 at Andersons Bay School in
Dunedin. Since then he has taught at Pipio School and had a year at Maungatoroto Primary in 1982. He moved onto St
Mary’s School in Whangarei before returning to Maungatoroto Primary from 1984 to 1986. He became a principal at Te
Reinga Primary in 1990, was a relieving principal at Turaki Primary, principal at South Makirikiri before becoming
principal back at Maungatoroto in 1997.
Tony has been a member of NZEI Te Riu Roa throughout his 22 year career and is has held the top positions at several
NZEI branches. He is respected as a dedicated and hard working principal with an interest in special education and early
childhood education.
