Waiariki's Radi Centre Of Excellence Begins To Take Shape
The latest plans for Waiariki's Radi Centre of Excellence in Wood Processing and Training are bigger and better than
ever. Though still subject to approval, the plans are a major source of excitement among those who have been privy to
them.
Focal point of the centre will be the impressive main lecture block that will accommodate Levels 5 and 6 students of the
School of Forestry and Wood Processing within its confines.
Designed by architectural consultants E.J. Donnelley & Associates, the block will feature attractive cultural themes and colours, a lecture wing and a conference wing on
either side of its central core. These will accommodate eight classrooms, a lecture theatre, a conference room and two
computer rooms.
Acting head of Waiariki's School of Forestry and Wood Processing, Gary Dender, says expressions of interest are being
received now for the prestigious Levels 5 and 6 programmes starting in February.
These include the National Certificate in Forestry (Business Management) and the National Certificate in Forestry
(Operations Management). Both these Level 5 programmes are of one-year duration. The former is aimed at opening up job
opportunities in forestry management, consulting and contracting, the latter in forest operations management as well as
forestry management.
The Level 6 National Diploma in Forestry (Forest Management) is a 2.5-year programme covering technical forestry,
forestry business management and practical forestry. It will lead to technical positions within forestry companies,
consultancy, research work and forestry contracting.
A Level 5 National Diploma in Wood Processing Technology is a one-year programme aimed at anyone interested in
management positions in sawmills, pulp and paper operations or wood processing. School leavers will need to complete a
one-year Certificate in Solid Wood Processing before going on to study for the diploma. Industry candidates should have
a Level 4 National Certificate (solid wood processing, wood panels, pulp and paper) or be studying toward it.
