Celebrating 25 Years at Waiariki
Waiariki Institute of Technology is calling on all past and present staff, students, council members & friends to join them as they celebrate their 25th Anniversary. Waiariki has come a long way since it first opened its
doors in February 1978. It is marking the celebrations with a Courses and Careers Open Day this Friday followed by a
Gala Dinner and Dance on Saturday night.
Courses and Careers Open Day
It has been two years since Waiariki held an open day at Mokoia Campus and everyone is invited to come to this years
event this Friday. The Courses and Careers Open Day has been planned so people can find out what courses and facilities
are on offer by Waiariki. The classrooms and practical workshops will all be open. People will have a chance to get a
close up look at activities in the hairdressing salon, art studios, automotive and mechanical engineering workshops,
kitchens, horticulture nursery and much more.
“I really encourage anyone who’s interested in looking around the campus to come along. They might be surprised at what
Waiariki has courses in,” says Rachel Piggin, marketing manager.
Tutors will be on hand to talk through study options for everyone regardless of age or previous qualifications. Waiariki
offers almost 100 programmes each year in around 30 subject areas so there is something for everyone.
A powhiri will take place at Tangatarua Marae at 10.30am and activities will run from at 11.00am – 4.00pm. Free shuttle
transport will leave every 30 minutes between 11.00am and 3.30pm from City Focus.

Gala Dinner and Dance
Waiariki staff and students from days gone by and today will be putting on their dancing shoes and heading to the
Rotorua Convention Centre on Saturday night. Special guest of honour will be Prime Minister, Rt Honourable Helen Clark.
Festivities will kick off with a cocktail party hosted by CEO, Dr Reynold Macpherson, followed by dinner and dance.
Local band Jumpstart will keep the anticipated 300 guests entertained to the wee hours to celebrate Waairiki’s silver
anniversary.
“The evening will be a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and colleagues”, says Rachel Piggin, Marketing
Manager.
