AUCKLAND (Wansolwara Online/Pacific Media Watch): Pacific Journalism Review, published by Auckland University of Technology's School of Communication Studies, has issued a call for research papers and commentaries on the theme "Media ownership and democracy" in the Asia-Pacific region.
Guest editors for this themed edition are Dr Alan Cocker and Dr Wayne Hope of the school. The theme outline:
Mario Segni, an Italian Member of the European Parliament, has introduced a bill to limit media concentration in the European Union. He believes that his Prime Minister, media magnate Silvio Berlusconi, poses a new question to Europe and the world: "Can you have democracy without rules that protect the pluralism of information?" Increasingly concentrated media power is clearly evident in the Pacific region. For example, New Zealand abolished foreign and cross-ownership media regulations in 1991 and today newspaper and magazine publications are dominated by two foreign-owned media companies with regional monopolies. Contributions are sought on the issue of media ownership and its implications for democracy with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region.
Some suggested themes:
* Implications of the Fairfax takeover of Independent Newspapers Ltd for the media industry future in New Zealand
* Ownership developments in the broadcast industry in Australia and New Zealand
* Trends in the Australian print media
* Cross-media ownership and foreign monopoly trends in the English-language media in the South Pacific
* Implications of the Hersant ownership monopoly of daily newspapers in French Polynesia and New Caledonia for democratic discourse
* Ownership convergences across mass media and new media
* Media ownership and control in Tonga
* Ownership trends and the implications for democracy in Indonesia and the Philippines.
