New Course Addresses Nursing Shortage
In response to staff shortages in nursing, Waiariki Institute of Technology has launched a new programme, Nursing in New
Zealand. This programme provides education for New Zealand registered nurses who have had a period of absence from
practice, and overseas registered nurses seeking New Zealand registration to demonstrate competency to practice, meet
Nursing Council of New Zealand standards and gain employment.
Patrea Andersen, Programme Co-ordinator says, “The Nursing in New Zealand programme provides a supportive learning
environment for registered nurses entering practice giving them the knowledge and confidence they need to incorporate
clinical innovation and technology into their practice.”
The programme is full time and extends over 4-8 weeks depending on registration status. As well as theory, students
undertake clinical experience in local hospitals. All successful graduates receive a Certificate in Nursing in New
Zealand, which provides evidence for prospective employers that they have demonstrated the required level of competence
for beginning nursing practice.
“The first programme was offered in partnership with Pacific Health,” says Shayne Scarlett, course Tutor. “The huge
support given to us by Tauranga Public Hospital shows the importance the healthcare industry places on this type of
re-training”.
A second programme is being offered and is due to start on July 28 in Rotorua. Clinical experience for participants will
be gained in both Rotorua and Tauranga hospitals. Anyone wishing to enroll or know more about the course should contact
Mandy Hunt, Student Advisor and Registrar on 0800 WAIARIKI (924 274).
