Canterbury and Hawke's Bay students for USA Space Camp
Announcement by the Royal Society of New Zealand: Two students have been selected to attend the USA Space Camp, Huntsville, Alabama from 25 July until 2 August.
Hamish Silverwood, Burnside High School, Christchurch, and Celia Hunter, Napier Girls' High School
Hamish and Celia were selected from a large number of applicants who were of a very high standard. They will join 150 students selected from around the world to participate in an action packed week which will include hands-on astronaut training, as well as learning about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts must face. The trainees are also involved in leadership training and will experience four G's of lift off force and actual weightlessness in the Space simulator.
Hamish has a passion for astronomy and earlier this year attended a week long astronomy summer camp run by the University of Canterbury. Celia also loves astronomy and works as a volunteer helper at the Hawke's Bay Holt Planetarium. She is a member of a support group which has an interest in Astronomy.
