Rural Community Trust - University Scholarships for Rural Students
The Rural Community Trust and Transpower NZ Ltd have announced the Transpower Tertiary Scholarship grants for rural
students for 2003.
The total awarded this year to the 12 recipients is $12,600, and individual grants are between $600 and $2,000. The
Trustees' task this in assessing applications is always difficult but particularly so this year because of the very high
standard of applications received.
The grants are to assist young people from rural areas seeking tertiary qualifications and can be used for a range of
student's tertiary expenses.
Trust Chairman, Denis Hazlett said, "The Trust recognises that the extra travel and distance from family that rural
students face can be a barrier."
The successful students are:
* Matthew Andrew, Wellsford. National Diploma in Architectural Technology.
* Kieran Byrne, Renwick. Bachelor of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
* Kim Chamberlain, Kaponga. Bachelors of Commerce & Property.
* Erica Hofstee, Hastings. Bachelor of Science.
* Steven Howarth, Takapau. Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture).
* Daniel Radcliffe, Urenui. Bachelor of Commerce (Hons).
* Ashlin Redpath, Palmerston North. Bachelor of Business Studies & Bachelor of Science.
* Samuel Stuart, Masterton. Certificate of Electrical Engineering.
* Lisa Vale, Egmont Village. Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
* Steven Willy, Eltham. Bachelor of Commerce & Bachelor of Science.
* Brendon Woods, Whakatane. Bachelor of Science & Bachelor of Business Studies.
* Daniel Woollaston, Stratford. Electrical Engineering National Certificate.
Successful applicants must be from a rural background, have a proven academic record, a commitment to study and
successfully demonstrate an ability to balance study with sport or recreation. Transpower is the owner and operator of
the national electricity transmission grid and is committed to a range of programmes aimed at promoting the electrical
engineering profession which is so necessary to manage a world class electricity power system. Preference therefore is
generally given to students studying Electrical Engineering.
