Nominations Invited for Peer Review Panels - Performance Based Research Fund
Nominations opened today for membership of the Peer Review Panels to be established to support the implementation of the
Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF).
“Nominations are being sought from suitably qualified people to serve as panel members or chairs on the eleven
multi-disciplinary peer review panels,” said Dr West, Chair designate of the Tertiary Education Commission.
“The peer review panels are a key component of the PBRF. The panels will evaluate the quality of the research
contributions of those involved in teaching degree-level programmes and/or undertaking research in tertiary education
organisations. The peer review process will assess quality based on a variety of measures including research outputs,
peer esteem factors and contribution to the development of new researchers and/or a vital high-quality research
environment,” explained Dr West.
The overall aim of the fund is to promote the development of lively and productive research cultures producing high
quality research, attractive and effective learning environments for students, and which are actively engaged with
relevant communities. The fund will also provide real incentives for tertiary organisations to attract and develop Maori
and Pacific researchers.
The opening of nominations follows the announcement earlier today by the Hon Steve Maharey, Associate Minister of
Education (Tertiary Education), that the Government had accepted all the recommendations of an expert working group on
how the Performance-Based Research Fund should work in New Zealand.
Nominations close on 3 January 2003 and more information can be found on the Transition Tertiary Education Commission
